There are many types of restaurants in China. There’s the Chinese and foreign restaurants, bars and fast food chains, hotpot restaurants, tea houses, Chinese delis and more.
Chinese restaurants in China are divided into three size categories.
Small restaurants can be found in great numbers in every city, town and village in China. In small restaurants the food tastes great and prices are low, but so are the hygiene and sanitation standards so you might want to be extra careful when choosing this type of place.
Small restaurants mostly serve various forms of rice, noodles or dumplings (usually steamed) in styles that change from region to region. Some of them may also offer a small selection of House Common Dishes, cold veggie dishes and soup.
The tables in small restaurants are usually small and without cloth, and they offer stools instead of chairs.
Medium Sized Restaurants
Medium sized restaurant are almost as common as small restaurant but since they are bigger they are much easier to spot and to find. They are also cleaner, brighter and with better decoration. As for the price, the rule of thumb says the bigger the place is the more expensive it will be.
Many of the Medium sized restaurants in china are House Common dishes restaurants. They might lean towards one type of regional cuisine but they usually offer a wide selection common dishes as well as a large variety of rice and noodles based dishes. Many of the average size restaurants in China offer boiled dumplings with more than one kind of filling.
Many of the big Chinese restaurants are concept restaurants. This means they might strictly adhere to one type of cuisine or that their menu is more about unique than common. Therefore, despite their size they might not have some of the dishes which are on FOODragon. But since they usually have big menus with English and photos it’s not a big deal.
Popular concept restaurants are seafood restaurants, hotpot restaurants and single cuisine restaurants.
