Lesson 4 – Internet
In Chinese the character ‘net’ is also used as the short for ‘internet’. That is great news because this character is pretty straight forward – three sides of a square containing two X shapes next to one another. In the past this character was used mainly for fishing nets and today it’s also used for the game of tennis, but if you see a sign with this character on the street, the chances it will lead you to a fishing shop or a tennis court are very slim. It is most likely to lead you into an internet-bar.
With the rise of mobile devices, laptops and the fact many Chinese homes have internet access, internet bars with computers are not as common in China as they used to be. Instead more and more coffee house, bars and restaurants offer WiFi hot spots.
