Lesson 5 – Alcohol and Cigarettes
The Chinese character for alcohol is part of the Chinese words for many alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer and more. The character itself looks like a labeled (there’s a line in the middle) bottle on the write with three drops of liquid on the left.
Smoking is very common in China and even though China is behind the west when it comes to ban smoking in public places like bars and restaurants our way to remember the Chinese character for ‘smoke’ is based on that idea.
If you examine this character carefully you will notice a small human figure enclosed within the boundaries of a square and a slightly larger one leaning on that square from the outside, as if it were having a smoke brake.
