Take a good look at these baozi. See anything unusual about them?
Well, this is kinda an unfair question while they are intact. How about now?
See the melted cheese on the left? The tomato red veggie combo to the right? What kind of baozi are these?
Last Saturday night presented a rare opportunity to try a very special and original type of baozi – laowai baozi.
It doesn’t get more fusion than laowai baozi – the traditional Chinese steamed bun stuffed with 4 different types of unorthodox fillings like Philly cheese-steak, Thai chili chicken, Mediterranean veggie and apple pie. It tastes as good as it sounds. To my surprise my personal favorite was actually the apple crumble and not because it came with whipped cream. The others were good too, and the Mediterranean really reminded me of home. Even though the Philly cheese-steak ones were more expensive than the rest (15 kuai instead of 10) they were a big hit, though I personally thought it could use some crunchiness (maybe add some croutons inside?). All in all it was a successful event and people had a great time as you can see:
To my understanding this was a one-time event held at Zap Urban Eatery but the plan is to have more of these in the future. For any inquiries you can write to laowai.baozi.beijing[at]gmail.com
